Odissi Dance Workshop

Odissi Dance Workshop

Rhythm, coordination, expressiveness, balance, body-mind presence. These are among the founding elements of an Odissi dancer’s training, based on the progressive practice of some basic postures (chauka and tribanga) through the study of increasingly complex exercises and movement sequences (steps, khandi and arasa).

Workshop levels: beginner and intermediate

Rhythm, coordination, expressiveness, balance, body-mind presence. These are among the founding elements of an Odissi dancer’s training, based on the progressive practice of some basic postures (chauka and tribanga) through the study of increasingly complex exercises and movement sequences (steps, khandi and arasa).

A proper body grammar that achieved advanced levels over the decades following the codification of this dance, thanks to its meticulous technical composition and variety.

Students will be guided by the teacher to first learn the fundamental techniques and then to gradually memorise movement sequences closer and closer to actual dance.

In addition to the rhythmic work of the feet and the use of the hands (mudra or hasta), eyes and facial expressions plays a prominent role, according to the instructions prescribed in the classical texts (Natyasastra and Abhinayadarpana), through elements of dance with no meaning (nritta) and dance aimed to tell stories (nritya).

The latter may be a particular focus of the course if the participants are advanced actor-dancers

Participants

Aimed at anyone who wants to engage in self-awareness work using their own body as a tool. Working barefoot, combined with hand movements through the constant practice of mudras, stimulates the perception of the subtlest energies that inhabit our body, thus contributing to their effective awakening and release.

No previous dance or theatre experiences are required, as long as you have a good aptitude for physical work.

For trained actor-dancers, the programme can be tailored to the needs and experience of the participants.

Main objectives: increasing body-mind awareness; improving concentration and coordination skills; analysing the Pada-artha Abhinaya technique of translating words into gestures; specific training for learning new choreographies.

Duration
